Distribution of Pneumococcal Types Isolated during Recent Several Years in Korea

Abstract
The object of this study was to investigate the types of pneumococcal strain that occurs commonly in Korea. The selected 200 pneumococcal strains were stored as freeze-dried from the January, 1970 to the January, 1975 at the Department of the Microbiology, National Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. They were examined later with the use of fourty-six types of diagnostic pneumococcus sera and 79 strains of sample failed to grow. The standard Quellung techique was employed with antisera -types of 1 through 48 (excluding the types of 26 and 30), which were obtained from the Statens Seruminstitut Copenhagen, through the arrangement of Dr. Erne Lund. The following results were obtained; 1) Total 16 different serotypes were obtained. The most common type was the type 1 with 76 strains and the next common type was the type 19 with 19 strains, which accounts for 62.8% and 15.7% respectively. The most common types out of all strains in descending orders are as follows: type 1, 19, 11, 9, 6, 4 and 3. 2) The Paeumoccal infections occurred predominantly during the winter and the early spring seasons (November through February) and it was rare during summer seasons. 3) The sex incidence was greater in male than female, 3 : 1. The lowest incidence occurs among females of over 40 years of age and there were only 8 strains of the all strains, the types involved were type 1, 19 and 16.
